{DKH Longest-Serving Employees Spotlight}
In celebration of 125 years of service, Day Kimball Healthcare (DKH) is showcasing many of our longest-serving employees who have dedicated 40 or more years to our organization. Here’s a chance to get a more personal look at the people woven into the history of your community hospital.
This month we recognize Laurie Cook, medical technologist and specialist in hematology, who began working at DKH in 1979.
Laurie earned a bachelor’s of science in medical technology from the University of Rhode Island. She was born and raised in Warwick, RI and now resides in Killingly, CT.

What sparked your interest in healthcare? My high school guidance counselor suggested I major in medical technology in college.
Do you remember your first day of work at DKH? It was kind of a blur!
What roles have you had at DKH? I have always worked in the laboratory, first as a generalist and later as the lead tech in hematology after getting my SH. (Specialist Hematology)
What do you like most about your job? I enjoy the microscope work, reading the smears of blood and other fluids to identify the cells.
What do you like most about working at DKH? What have you gained? I enjoy the sense of community and the feeling of serving that community. I have gained longtime coworkers and friends like Elizabeth Murphy and Roberta Sharpe. I have enjoyed traveling to train on several of the instruments the hospital has acquired over the last 40 years.
What is your proudest moment at DKH? Giving birth to my daughter here!
What is your fondest memory of your time at DKH so far? The wonderful party that was held for the 100th anniversary of DKH.
What do you like to do outside of work? I am an avid reader. I enjoy knitting, especially socks.
